Keeping your oil fresh and contaminant-free is one of the keys to keeping your vehicle performing at its best. It seems a bit simplistic, but think about it – You’re driving a finely-engineered machine, with a lot of moving parts that work together to give you granular control and a powerful performance.
If you don’t have lubrication keeping the friction down, then eventually it all falls apart! As simple truths go, this one is really pretty basic, but it’s also one that we tend to forget and ignore until it becomes a problem.
Today we’ll talk about the importance of oil change service, as well as how you can take worry out of the equation by simply getting the right maintenance at the right time on a regular basis. We’ll also cover some frequently asked questions on the subject before we go, so if you’re ready, then let’s talk about oil and your vehicle!
Getting your oil changed on a regular basis is a vital part of protecting your investment. Over time, fresh oil that you’ve added can begin to get sludgy and when that happens, the viscosity is going to change and your engine won’t be lubricated as efficiently.
While your filter can catch a lot of contaminants to help minimize the degradation of your oil, that too needs to be changed on a regular basis. To put it simply – clean oil is what your engine needs to work the way that it has been designed, so skipping an oil change every now and again is not a good idea at all!
While you’re probably in the habit of topping up your oil and other fluids on a regular basis, changing out your oil completely and replacing the filter are a little more involved. That’s why it’s a good idea to make sure your oil is getting changed and your engine is getting the regular inspections it needs to get ahead of any potential problems that might be brewing down the line.
You can do this by simply making sure that you are getting your manufacturer’s recommended regular preventative maintenance on a regular basis. While there are a lot of checks that your vehicle is going to need based on the mileage, your oil is always going to be part of every check when you bring in your vehicle for maintenance.
On-average, you’re looking at about 5000 miles for a standard filter, or up to 10,000 miles for a synthetic oil filter or an extended-life variety of filter. That said, you’ll want to defer to your manufacturer’s recommendations when it comes to oil filter change requirements. With imported cars, especially German models, this is extremely important, as the quality engineering is going to be reliant on proper lubrication and regular care.
In most cases, in the course of your regular preventative maintenance this will mean that every other time you visit your oil filter will be changed out, but again, it ultimately depends on the make and model of the vehicle.
No. Even with low mileage, you’re going to get things like moisture build-up or the breakdown of additives, and with something as vital to your engine with oil it simply isn’t worth the risk of running your engine with sub-standard oil.
Keep up with your oil change schedule – It’s quick, easy, and definitely worth it in both the short and the long run.
When you wait too long to change your oil, then the viscosity of the oil is going to change and then you’ve got a problem. At this point, it’s no longer lubricating your engine as efficiently, and you’re going to have increased friction on things like bearings and pistons.
To say this is inefficient would be an understatement – This kind of friction can cause heavy damage in very little time, so it’s important to get your oil changed regularly.
While you can get an oil change anywhere, anytime someone is looking under the hood of your vehicle you want them to be an expert. At Louden Motorcars, we have well over 40 years of experience, so even doing a routine oil change we may notice something about your vehicle that other mechanics might miss.
Don’t take our word for it, though. Why not bring your vehicle into Louden Motorcars and see what it’s like to have your vehicle serviced by someone who knows your exact make and model? You’ll save time and money and best of all, your vehicle will be getting the right inspections and maintenance at exactly the right time, and all on YOUR schedule.
Best of all, with over 40 years of experience with German vehicles, you’ll know that at Louden Motorcars the job’s being done RIGHT.
