Paying attention to your tires really pays off. After all, what is a car without wheels? Today we’re going to talk a little about tire service and what it actually entails so that the next time you might be tempted to put it off you can put it off you can resist that urge and simply get it done.

We’ll cover some of the most common types of tire service, as well as whether or not that is included in your regularly scheduled preventative maintenance. Along the way we’ll also touch on some frequently asked questions on the subject and if you live in the DFW area, we’ll also tell you the best place to get the work done.

So, what is tire service all about and why is it so vital to performance? Let’s take a look and see!

Common Types of Tire Service and What They’re For

While we take them for granted, those 4 rubber tires are what gives you motion, control, and good mileage. We tend not to notice them until there’s an issue, so knowing what tire service entails and what it can do for you is your best defense against forgetting to get them checked.

Here are 4 common types of tire service and what they’re for:

  • Inspection – General tire inspection is exactly what it sounds like – it’s getting a closer look at your tires. Air pressure gets checked, treads are inspected for wear, and in the process a quick inspection of your tires even gives a seasoned mechanic a good idea of how your suspension is holding up. That’s because any issues in your suspension will affect the distribution of force and weight and this will be reflected in the wear and tear on your tires!
  • Balancing – Tire balancing is the process of adding small, metal weights to your tires to help ensure that the distribution of weight on your wheels is as perfectly centered as possible. This helps to reduce undue stress on the sidewalls that you might get if your tires aren’t balanced and prolongs their overall performance life.
  • Rotation – Tire rotation basically consists of moving your tires to different positions to make sure that usage wear is consistent down the road. Like balancing, this extends the service life of your tires by keeping wear and tear as consistently balanced as possible.
  • Wheel alignment – When your wheels aren’t perfectly aligned, they are going to get friction unevenly, and this is going to show in the treads of your tires. By aligning your wheels precisely your vehicle is going to distribute weight and associated friction evenly, rather than wearing down the sidewalls as they would if your wheels weren’t perfectly aligned.

Does Preventative Maintenance Include My Tires?

Yes, regular preventative maintenance is designed to ensure that regular checks are being done on all parts of your vehicle, and that does indeed include your tires. With that said, what is being checked and when is going to depend on your manufacturer’s recommendations, so you can ask your shop to check your tires anytime you like and it’s always a good idea.

After all, they’re holding up your vehicle and those tire treads are also the grip on the road that gives you good performance in the form of mileage and granular control. While higher-end tires can reduce the required maintenance frequency, you still want to get your tires inspected on a regular basis.

Tire Service FAQ

Your tires should be replaced every 6 years, as a general rule. This can vary a little based on how much you drive, the quality of your current tire set, the climate and conditions where you are driving, and also whether or not you are getting regular maintenance.

That said, if you are taking good care of your vehicle, getting your tires and suspension checked on a regular basis, then every 6 years is usually when you’re going to get them changed.

Your tires need to be rotated approximately every 6 months. Tire rotation helps to ensure that the wear on them is going to be evenly distributed and helps to ensure that they’ll last longer, so don’t skimp out on your tires – They’re doing a lot of hard work for you and need to be maintained!

While you will want to defer to your manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, you’ll usually want to get your tires rotated and properly inspected every 6000 – 8000 miles – Basically every 6 months.

Keep in mind that measuring by time isn’t going to work for every driving style, either. Typically, the real indicator of wear and tear is going to be the state of your treads, not the time, but if you are keeping up with your manufacturer’s regular preventative maintenance then this shouldn’t be a problem.
